Fourth Years.

Introduction

Hi! I am Professor Mini and I will be taking you for your 4th Year Magical Healing Lessons.

Just a couple of things to remember..... I expect homework  to be handed in on time.

That means late homework will not receive housepoints, although it will be graded.

Midnight the following Sunday your time zone is your deadline. Good Grammar does count toward your grade, so remember to use spell check and write in complete sentences!  I would like to see questions answered with substantial paragraphs. This will ensure better grades in marking. Creativity is not compulsory but is often used, feel free to be as creative as you wish ;)  Please submit your homework in the appropriate topic in the Owlery.

Now, if you have any questions at all, please drop by my Office and ask away :) my Office is in the Castle… on the First Floor Corridor.

That is the business stuff sorted out, now for your lessons!

Week One

Hello. Still with the class and raring to go for another year? Good! Sooooooooo, you are ready to learn of some of the ...er…… unpleasant illnesses and injuries? Maybe even thinking of advancing on to Owl and Newt?

Well not today….. your first lesson is an easy one. There is no lesson. Don’t think you get away with it though, I would like you to tell me what you think you will achieve in this class and what you would do with that knowledge, for example…… you may want to learn about spell damage and what to do about it, if your were to be a Duelling Ref for instance.

Homework:

A good paragraph or two about what you have learned, what you would like to learn this year and what you would eventually like to achieve with the knowledge.

Week Two - Dragon Pox

Scratch, scratch, itch itch. Green and Purple rash.

sneeze, sneeze, sparks fly

Will they live or will they die?

Oh my. This very old rhyme, taught to me a long time ago by my very old Grandmother sounds like a lot of silliness. Don’t be mislaid! Dragon Pox is very serious. *whispers in a soft voice* It can be fatal!

Dragon Pox is most unpleasant to have, only Witches and Wizards can catch it, though, so don’t worry about your Muggle friends. It is similar to Muggle Chicken Pox and Smallpox with the same symptoms, but  could also leave some nasty pock  marks(scarring), as well as that, Dragon Pox is going to give a patient a lasting green tinge!

Some cases are going to have, in between the toes, a green AND purple rash along with sparks emitting from the nostrils if a patient sneezes! Our older patients are going to be the ones that are most likely to catch this contagious disease (which could be fatal) rather than our younger Witches and Wizards.

Do not give up hope! Whilst the disease has not yet been wiped out, we can thank Gunhilda of Gorsemoor (1556 - 1639) for developing a cure. The patient will have to go to St. Mungo’s for this, though.

HOMEWORK:  Remember, I expect full sentences.

1. A patient comes to you with some of the symptoms of Dragon Pox, what are the first things you are going to do? Keep in mind this is a contagious disease.

2. Please tell me what the symptoms are.

3. A little research here, find out and tell me what ward this would be treated in at St. Mungo’s Hospital.

4. Tell me a little about the cure for this Disease.

Week Three - Splinching

Let us start off with the good news! ALL splinching injuries result in full recovery.

Don’t get complacent however. It may seem a bit of fun to lose an eyebrow but think about perhaps losing your nose along with that, even a limb, Splinching can be incredibly painful. And messy. And bloody.

Splinching happens when apparition or disapparition goes wrong. Sometimes only a bit of clothing can get left behind, embarrassing but not life threatening.  Sometimes the loss of body parts IS life threatening!

We have to learn how to help a Splinched patient. Yes, it is just a bit more than finding and gathering up the relevant body parts.  Let’s start with simple cuts and gashes. The best way to heal these would be to use that little bottle of Purple Wound Cleaning Potion…….yes, that one on the shelf, did you know it smokes on contact with the skin, very impressive! Then bandage the wound until healed. Now, for the more severe injuries. Murtlap Essence is VERY good for large cuts or slices of missing muscle. If you have not been keeping your supplies up to date, you can also use Essence of Dittany (this also has the benefit of stopping any scarring) the wonderful brown liquid that looks so boring but is very very good, remember, a little goes a long way. Finally, if required, give Blood Replenishing Potion and wrap up any wound. Make the patient rest.

Please do not forget that if you feel in the slightest way that your patient is too badly injured for you to care for, take them to St. Mungo’s and be proud that your first aid treatment will have counted toward their lives being saved!

Homework

1. When does Splinching occur?

2. Name and describe some potions used for Splinching victims?

3. How would you treat someone who is missing a finger after having been Splinched?

4. Why do you think we still wrap up wounds if we are using Magical Potions?

5. Would you send a patient to St. Mungo’s for a Splinching accident?

Week Four - Lycanthropy and Werewolfry

A hot topic around here at the moment!!!!! You may look at the title of this weeks lesson and wonder what the difference is. Are you getting confused? No need to…...let’s split the two and look at the definitions. Arsenius Jigger wrote about these in his book The Essential Defence against the Dark Arts…. I think he has rather a lot to answer for the confusion! You may do some research about him if you wish.

Lycanthropy is a mental state someone suffers from, in which they believe they are becoming a Werewolf.  Werewolfry is considered the condition of being a werewolf.

I hope that makes it a little clearer for you. Now our main  concern is in treating a known Werewolf and also someone who has just been bitten by a Werewolf. What are we going to do? A Werewolf is a dangerous being indeed. When your beloved friend can turn from a happy, lively Student into a ferocious Wolf each full Moon, you had  better know a little of how to help them!  If you come across someone just bitten by a Werewolf, you had better know  how to treat them! Ready? Here we go, make sure to take notes.

For someone who has just been bitten, a mixture of powdered silver and dittany will seal the bite and allow the witch or wizard to live on as a werewolf. Yes, a Bite from a Werewolf can be fatal! Secondly, during a full moon, a person with Werewolfry should be kept isolated and away from human population as much as possible, since they will attack anyone they can without being able to control themselves. We are in the fortunate position of the potion called - Wolfsbane - being invented. (Research and let me know who by). If this is taken regularly, the Werewolf will be more able to keep their own mind and not have one of a Werewolf during the transformation stage. Beware, it may not be total protection from them so take extra good care of your patient….and yourself!

Homework:

1. Tell me the difference between Lycnathropy and Werewolfry.

2. Tell me how you would treat someone who has just been bitten by a Werewolf.

3. If you care for a friend or family member who has Werewolfry, what are you going to do every full Moon?

4. Tell me about the Wolfsbane Potion, what does it do, how is it used?

5. This is where your research will have come in handy. Who invented the Wolfsbane Potion?

Week Five - Scrofungulus

Oh dear oh dear oh dear! Scrofungulus. Caused by a Magical Bug that affects only the Wizarding World and needs to be be treated at St. Mungo’s Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries.

How will we know if one of our Witch or Wizard Friends has this disease? Well, that green fungus growing on their body is a good sign! But let’s start off with the first sign of a dry patch of skin on the nape of the neck, this slowly spreads and gives the patient extreme itching. The longer a patient suffers with the disease, the more vibrant the shade of green becomes, sounds nice, but not at all pretty!

Do not give up hope, there is a cure, well actually a combination of potions which include the Mandrake Restorative Draft which must be taken once a day and we add to this, a solution of diluted Bubotuber Pus. This is to be administered to the infected areas once every six hours until the fungus has gone completely.

Homework:

1. How would you decide that a patient has Scrofungulus?

2. Is there a cure for Scrofungulus?

3. If someone came to you with dry itchy skin around their neck, what would you advise them to do?

4. Write me a short paragraph about you imagining that you have to care for a patient with this disease. What you would do, how you would react etc.

Week 6 - Unforgivables, part One

I'm sure that as fourth year students in Magical Healing, you've heard about Unforgivable Curses. If not then I'll tell you now, Unforgivable Curses are the three most powerful and sinister spells known to the wizarding world, and are tools of the Dark Arts. Using any of these three curses on another human being will result in a life sentence to Azkaban. As Healers you will have to treat patients who have unfortunately fallen victim to these curses. For the next two weeks we will be reviewing how to care for these patients.

The Imperius Curse places the victim in a trance or dreamlike state, leaving him or her under the complete control of the caster. The experience is described as a "wonderful release" from any sense of responsibility. The victim is calm, from doing things they would be physically incapable of otherwise, to committing horrible crimes, and they obey any order.

When the victim of this curse is finally released they go through a couple symptoms. The first symptom that these individuals undergo is memory loss, this effect can be remedied by a memory potion. Your patient should drink a small vial of memory potion once a day for the next three days. If their memory still has not returned after the third day, you should administer a larger dose of the potion once every 48hrs. It its rare that a larger dose of the potion is needed.

After their memory is recovered patients being to recall the things they have done under the curse. The second symptom that patients who have suffered the Imperius Curse, is depression. On occasion the patients must be restrained to prevent them from hurting themselves and others. The Elixir to Induce Euphoria should be given to the patient to help battle the depression. Excessive amounts of this elixir can lead to excessive singing and nose-tweaking are possible side-effects so make sure to add some peppermint while preparing to counterbalance these effects. It is important that you only administer small doses to your patients, this elixir can become addictive if taken too often.

Homework: This week I want you to make sure you have read the lesson carefully and answer as fully as possible......

1. What are the effects of the Imperius Curse?

2. In addition of to the two symptoms listed above what other symptoms do you think patients might experience?

3. Why do you think some potions and elixirs can become addicting?

Week Seven - Unforgiveables - part two

The Cruciatus Curse

And truly unforgivable this Curse is! It will inflict excruciating, intolerable pain on a victim. To have the desired *shudders* affect the person casting this will have the desire and emotions to really want to harm their victims as well as making sure the Incantation and Wand are used properly. They will desire to cause pain on their victim. It is thought of as form of torture and sadly was used quite regularly by Death Eaters.

Those who have suffered extreme attacks of the cruciatus curse fall into fits of hysteria. This can lead the patients to cause harm to themselves….. and others! That's why its important to isolate individuals that have been tortured by the Cruciatus Curse until it can be determined that the patient is not a threat to themselves or others.

To help soothe your patients hysteria you will need to give them treacle of a Glumbumble. This can be slightly bitter so mix it with honey or dilute with sugar water. Be careful to monitor the amount of glumbumble you administer to the patient, large doses can lead to chronic depression.

Unfortunately some individuals suffer from a psychotic break. When a patient loses touch with reality there is very little that we can do for them. In some cases the patient reverts back to a childlike state in others they may create another reality perceiving things differently than they are. These patients need constant attention which can become a burden on their families, so they are placed in the Spell Damaged Ward in St. Mungo's. The Healers in charge of this ward are not only skilled in magical healing but are the best caregivers in the Wizarding World.

Homework:  please give as much detail as possible.

1. What are some of the effects of the Cruciatus Curse?

2. What can be given to lessen hysteria?

3. What can happen to people who suffer psychotic breaks

Week Eight

This could be your most important lesson...... what I want you to do is.... REVISE! Revise, revise, revise.

Next week will be your exam and all the previous lessons will vanish. Make sure you have read eveything over, taken notes is need be and then ..... this is very impotant....... POST IN THE OWLERY THAT YOU HAVE READ THIS LESSON.......by the end of this week.
